Renewed Framework and APP- Staff are to be congratulated and thanked for the vast amount of time they have invested in developing new units of work in line with the Renewed Framework. This process has been completed for the Spring and Summer Terms and staff have now begun developing new units for the Autumn term.Staff have also begun the first training relating to APP, the new assessment guidelines. Pilot programs have been implemented and this process will continue over the 2008/9 academic year.
Matheletics- The school subscription to Mathletics continued in 2007/8 and was a huge success. This program is still very popular with students and staff and all indicators would suggest that it is having a positive impact on securing number facts and reinforcing topics taught in the classroom. It is important to note that students enjoy using it! Our subscription continues in 2008/9 and all students now have new usernames and passwords.
ICT- The integration of ICT into Maths has been good in all year levels. Year Seven access to ICT has been limited but increased numbers of computers have improved the Year Seven situation. Things should be further improved with the expansion of the Year Seven suite in 2008/9.
Pupil Survey- A comprehensive survey of pupil attitudes to Maths was conducted by Top Set Year 7 students in the Spring Term as part of their unit on Data Handling. Students in all Year groups were surveyed and the results were very pleasing from a Subject Coordinator's point of view. The students' enjoyment of 'hands on' practical tasks was noted and staff will work hard to incorporate this into lessons.
Springboard- Implementation of voluntary booster classes for Yr. 6 students at risk. These were conducted before school. Many thanks go to JW for taking one of these groups and to Don Maidment for providing hot chocolate and toast.
World Maths Day (March 14)- was a whole school maths day with a school wide mathematical treasure hunt and puzzle to be solved. It was pleasing to see the large number of Year 4 & 5 students who won prizes in this competition.
Bryanston Maths Challenge- Year 6 students, competed in the Bryanston Maths Challenge with both teams finishing in the Top 5. Thank you to Miss Revill for her management of this team.
Poole Grammar Link- The year 7 link with Poole Grammar was a huge success and a big thank you goes to Dr. Keith Noble for his time and effort with our top end students. Extremely high numbers of successful applicants to the Grammar Schools was pleasing.
Maths Activity Days- Year level maths days were enjoyable and stimulating. Feedback from students was extremely positive. Students enjoyed the tasks and were involved in valuable learning. Thank you to all the teachers for their efforts.
The Year 7 Maths Day- with guest teachers from Poole Grammar was also very successful. Our thanks go to Mr. Rowat for coordinating this at the Poole Grammar end.
Year Six SATS- The year six students can be very proud of their efforts in 2007/8. They achieved good results and their attitude was positive.
Mathematics
2007/8 was a very busy year in Mathematics. The Government introduced The Renewed Framework and the Assessing Pupil Progress initiative. This reqired a considerable investment of time by staff in all schools to adapt the way we approach teaching and assessment in mathematics.
