The Haunted School

Chapter 1

The two young children hoped they had not been seen, as they tip-toed nervously down the cold, endless steps into the eerie playground. Finn Watkins – an adventurous sports enthusiast – gazed curiously into the dark, stormy sky as luminous lightning rumbled overhead.

Shivering, Finn’s best friend Erin, who was a small girl with glasses, was staring blankly over at the other side of the spooky playground as huge, jet black ravens soared noisily overhead.

“I’m n-n-not s-s-so sure ab-bout this,” squeaked Erin, shaking in the ice cold wind.

“Don’t be a wimp!” shouted Finn as he started to stroll off towards the barely visible school.

Chapter 2

As they stumbled slowly towards the huge, dim outline of the creepy building, Erin was thinking about what had brought them here in the first place…

Only a week before, her and Finn had been staying late after school to take part in Mr Whitley’s extremely popular website club. As were getting ready to go, they accidentally overheard some teachers talking nervously in the dusty staffroom…

“Th-this is getting kind of creepy now!” stuttered Mrs Knight.

“Come on, you must be joking,” muttered Mr Minz in his strong Australian accent.

“No, no, I’m serious, I keep on hearing a mysterious voice coming from Mr Pike’s office, saying that it’s behind  you and-“

Suddenly, the creepy conversation was broken awkwardly by a strange voice shouting “Oh no it’s not!” At once, Erin knew that Finn, who was naturally curious about anyone else’s private business, was practically bursting to go in and listen to more. But Erin, of course, was already dragging Finn away violently.

As she woke up from her daydreaming, she could hear Finn beckoning her in. They started to shuffle past the dark, musty office. At once, they both froze like rock solid ice statues, had they been busted?

Chapter 3

Slowly, the gleaming bright light started to fade away as Finn leapt forward towards the huge, double doors.

“Scaredy cat! Scaredy cat!” shouted Finn arrogantly to Erin (who was leaning against the wall looking startled).

Despite trying to pull away, before she knew it Erin was being practically strangled by Finn, who was attempting to open the dusty door whilst holding the dim torch and grabbing onto Erin tightly at the same time. As they edged silently towards Mr Pike’s office, all went quiet. Staring at the huge, bright whight rectangle door, Finn reached out his delicate, rosy pink hand towards the jet black handle and stepped timidly inside. Scared, they made their way (clutching eachother tightly) towards the other side of the dark room and hid under the large wooden desk.

Suddenly, they froze in horror as a gigantic, alien looking shadow came into their view. A voice filled their ears. Gruff. Awful. Loud. Then it stopped. It was then that the batteries in Finn’s new torch died…

Chapter 4

At once, the room went pitch black. All that could be seen was the bright orange lava lamp glowing silently in the dark corner of the sweet smelling room.

Suddenly, they could hear the awful creaking sound of heavy footsteps coming towards them.

“Help!” cried Erin, “We’re all going to die!”

However, Finn ws concentrating on a memory that had flashed through his mind: A scary dream that he had had at his best friend’s house, a superhero, who had thrown his torch at the ugly monster. That monster was long gone. This vision discomforted Finn, in panic he grabbed for his torch in complete blindness and lobbed it at the grunting alien. Erin screamed. The creature was collapsing in pain on the floor. As a result, Finn pinched Erin’s shaking arm and began to drag her away furiously.

“I’m in trouble!” thought Finn worriedly. Determined not to get caught, they ran as fast as they could, darting round corners, shooting through doors, the gentle feeling of a cool breeze getting closer and closer, they threw themselves through the rusty double doors – they had escaped.

Chapter 5

As they got to school the next day, (the last day of term!) Erin was daydreaming about the busy night before: Rushing up to Finn’s room, before his mum – who was brilliant at baking things – came to offer them their usual 6oclock slice of homemade cake. Of course, they didn’t tell her why they were soaking wetand smothered in chocolaty brown mud, nor why Erin was shaking madly (in fright).

A minute later, all she knew was that her and Finn were being crowded by a group of year sevens shouting something at them.

“Yeah, did you hear about those two idiots who broke into the school last night?” questioned the scruffy year seven boy – Erin stared at Finn in horror.

“Apparently, they whacked Mr Pike with a torch! – stupid kids!”

     “M-mr Pike?” stuttered Erin shuddering,

“Yep, someone told me that he’d been practising for the school pantomime after school!”

As the loud boys strolled away, Erin quivered,

“Do you think we’ve been caught?”

“Nah – plenty more opportunitys for causing trouble to come!!!” laughed Finn.

“No wonder he needed to practise – last year he had to read off a sheet of paper in the pantomime!”
